PPC September meeting:

Among the items discussed at the September meeting of the Parish Pastoral Council:

Correspondence

Fr Stephen referred to a letter issued by the Irish Bishops outlining drop-off in congregations, especially since Covid.  Fr Michael Murphy is heading up a group to examine ways to get people back to Mass.

Fr Stephen passed around a handout “Why Sunday Matters” – Questions for Parish Leadership, Liturgy Groups, Parish Pastoral Councils and other Ministry Groups, which raised eight questions in relation to this issue.  M. Judge complimented Fr Stephen’s Masses and how well they are received online. Miriam gave the example of her aunt who tunes in regularly from the UK. Fr Stephen acknowledged that occasions bring crowds to Mass –  First anniversary, month’s mind etc.  He feels that good music and good liturgy enriches the Mass and praised the fact that we have such great choirs in our Church, which is not the case in all local churches. Eileen also complimented Fr Stephen’s Masses and that so many people tune in via webcam and radio.  Margaret mentioned that nowadays young parents find it hard to keep their children quiet and that Mass is avoided as it can be difficult with disruptive children. Julie spoke about the new children’s newsletters and enticing children to come to Mass.  Miriam and Ruth feel that the children’s liturgy is working well with approx. 10-20 children attending.   Ann suggested that targeting the grandparents to educate the children in the way of the Church and especially Mass may be an option.  Kevin suggested circulating the “Why Sunday Matters” Questions to the parishioners for their feedback.
