On Friday, June 16th, the sixth class pupils from Scoil íosa marked an important milestone in their young lives when they celebrated their graduation ceremony. Each pupil was presented with a graduation certificate. Special awards were presented to those who had an excellent attendance record during the school year. The school principal, Kenneth Dennedy, addressed the pupils, their parents and families, congratulating the pupils for being such a wonderful and exemplary group during their time in the school, wishing them will and warning them of the pitfalls and temptations, notably drugs, that they will face as they move onto secondary school.
Fr Stephen, then celebrated the Graduation Mass, and spoke about the recent death of singer and lead singer of the rock group Aslan, Christy Dignam, who died a few days previously. He mentioned in particular the effects that drug addiction had on him and the band at various times in his musical career. Music and singing at the Mass was provided by the Scoil Íosa choir under the direction of teachers Ms Carol Freeley and accompanied by Ms Sarah Scully on keyboard.
On Monday, June 19th, as a mark of appreciation from the parish, the children who were Altar-Servers and members of the Scoil íosa Children’ choir went on an outing to Mayo Leisure Point in Castlebar where they had an enjoyable time bowling and taking part in the Q-2000 laser game. They also enjoyed some lovely food which was served in the dining area of the venue. Thanks again to teachers, Carol Freeley, Sarah Scully and Sean Kenny, who accompanied the children.
On Tuesday, June 20th there was a rehearsal for newly-recruited Altar-Servers in St Patrick’s church. All who have volunteered to be servers for the coming year were present and Fr Stephen took them through the entire routine from the time they enter the sacristy, where they sign the register, put on their garments, say the Prayer before Mass, before processing out into the sanctuary, until the end of Mass. Four experienced servers took part in the rehearsal and demonstrated the various elements involved in being an Altar-Server.
